Installing Odoo on an Amazon Web Services EC2 Ubuntu Server v8
What do I need to do to get started?
The first step you must take is to sign up for an Amazon Web Services (AWS) account. Just like with most sign up processess you are required to provide a valid email.
Selecting an EC2 region and then installing an instance
When you first sign up for Amazon Web Services (AWS) there will be a great number of options available. You will be interested in the EC2 service that provides virtual servers. Amazon will recommend a default region that it believes is appropriate for your location.
Using the free tier server option
In this video we select the free tier option for Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit server. It only has 1 gigabyte of memory and 1 CPU but it provides enough power to get up and running with Odoo without any fees.
Setting up Putty to connect with your new AWS Ubuntu server
First use Puttygen to create a private key (ppk) file to use with Putty.
Once you create your instance, Amazon will provide you a key that provides you secure access to your server instance. In the video we run puttygen to generate the ppk that is used in putty.
Configure Putty to access your Ubuntu server running on AWS
Inside of your instance configurration you will have an external IP address. Use this as the host address for your Putty connection. Next go into the SSH 2 security settings and provide the path to your key file you generated frorm puttygen.
Installing Odoo 8 on the server
What do you need to consider for an Odoo 8 installation on AWS?
Fortunately, for the most part setting up Odoo 8 on an AWS installation is as easy or even easier than it is to setup Odoo 8 on your own virtual server or using other perhaps less friendly services. You will need to go into your security groups and make sure and add Port 8069 (or whichever port you wish to run Odoo on) so that your browser can access the Odoo instance.
Simple Installation Included in the video
In this video we install Odoo 8 on the AWS virtual server and verify that we can properly access the server. In videos referenced below you can see greater details on installing Odoo and the Odoo Installation Ubuntu Bootcamp which goes shows you how to go on and configure your server to startup and use Nginx to make your Odoo installation accessible through a domain name.
